FAQ - Clinic

1. Which treatment should I choose for my first visit?

The two primary services that we provide are TCM herbal medicine and acupuncture. A general rule is to book for Acupuncture if you are experiencing a musculoskeletal issue such as physical pain, and Herbal Medicine if it is internal related, such as digestive or menstrual issues. Yet, many conditions benefit from both approaches. If you have a mixture of complaints or are simply unsure which to book, just reach out via email or phone prior to scheduling your appointment.

2. How should I prepare for my first session?

  • Diet: Eat a light meal and stay well-hydrated, allowing at least an hour for digestion.

  • Attire: Wear loose, comfortable clothing, particular loose pants or shorts, as most acupuncture points are on limbs, head, and abdomen.

  • Avoidance: Refrain from caffeine, alcohol, and pain medications several hours before and 24 hours after treatment.

  • Post-Treatment: Don't plan strenuous activities or stressful appointments right after your session, as acupuncture's effects linger. You might feel deeply relaxed or slightly numb/sore, but many leave feeling energized.

  • Forms: Save time by completing the online forms sent to you prior to the appointment.  Alternatively, arrive 15 minutes early to fill them out at the clinic without impacting your treatment time.

3. What should I expect on my first visit?

Your initial visit will be the most extensive in your treatment course. We'll begin with a comprehensive consultation to gather vital health details, including your lifestyle routines, diet, history, and more. This assessment also involves examining your tongue and pulse. Once we have all the necessary information, we'll provide a TCM diagnosis. We'll offer medical advice, lifestyle tweaks, and dietary recommendations tailored to your diagnosis. We'll gladly address any questions or concerns you may have before commencing treatment.

During treatment, the needles will remain for approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Any additional advice or precautions regarding your session will be provided at the end of the treatment. If you have any further questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask. We're here to ensure your comfort and well-being.

4. What should I expect during acupuncture treatment?

The sensations experienced with acupuncture needles can vary from person to person, often linked to individual pain tolerance. Our practitioners utilize multiple needling techniques to accommodate these differences and the nature of the illness being treated. For most individuals, there is minimal pain involved. However, you will likely experience the “de-qi” sensation. This sensation may manifest as numbness, heaviness, electrical tingling, or soreness, indicating the movement of qi and the initiation of the healing process.

Please be aware that any sharp pain or severe cramping sensations are not typical or beneficial reactions to the needles. While this is highly unlikely, if such sensations occur, please promptly inform the practitioner. Your comfort and well-being are our utmost concern.

5. How frequently should I receive treatment?

The frequency and duration of your treatment plan will depend on the nature, duration, and severity of your condition. For acute conditions like sports injuries or acute coughs, you may need more frequent sessions over a shorter treatment period. In contrast, chronic conditions might require a longer course of treatment with less frequent visits.

Generally, I recommend one to two treatments per week for addressing specific complaints. For ongoing health maintenance and rejuvenation, monthly visits are often beneficial. Your personalized treatment plan will be discussed during your initial consultation to ensure it aligns with your unique needs and goals.

6. How safe is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is definitely a safe treatment option.

The needles used are sterile, single-use, and disposable, ensuring safety and hygiene. They are also extremely fine, causing minimal bleeding or pain. After use, needles are securely disposed of in biohazard containers. Acupuncture typically has minimal side effects, offering a comfortable experience.

7. Is it safe to receive Acupuncture with medications, surgery, or other treatments?

In most cases, it's safe to receive acupuncture alongside prescribed medications, post-surgery, or during other treatments like chiropractic care, physiotherapy, or massage. Acupuncture can complement these therapies and enhance the body's recovery processes. If you have concerns about your specific situation, don't hesitate to contact us or consult with your healthcare provider.

8. How safe are herbs?

Chinese herbal medicine is generally safe and effective. Our herbal extract granules, sourced from reputable suppliers in Taiwan, comply with Health Canada standards. These products undergo rigorous testing to ensure they don't contain toxic substances beyond permissible limits set by Health Canada. While herbal medicine is safe in most instances, there may be cases where alternative treatment options are more suitable. Our doctors will carefully evaluate your condition and recommend appropriate alternatives if necessary.

9. Can children receive treatment?

Absolutely! Pediatrics is a vital aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with historical records highlighting its benefits for children's physical and mental development. We highly encourage early TCM treatment for children as it often yields quicker and more pronounced results compared to adults. Additionally, our lifestyle and dietary recommendations can significantly enhance their growth and well-being.

However, it's essential to note that acupuncture is not recommended for children under 3 years old due to their limited ability to remain still during treatment. For young children, acupressure, which involves massaging acupuncture points, is a suitable alternative.

Please remember that children under 16 require consent from a parent or guardian to receive acupuncture or herbal treatment.

10. Can pregnant women receive treatment?

Absolutely! Acupuncture is not only safe but also highly beneficial for expectant mothers and their babies. It can effectively address various pregnancy-related issues, such as morning sickness, edema, lower back pain, and sciatica, among others. Additionally, acupuncture can aid in labor induction, pain reduction during labor, and even assist in repositioning a breech baby. Herbal medicine is also an option for many issues during pregnancy. Herbal medicine is also an option for multiple issues during pregnancy. With the correct prescriptions, it is generally safe for patients to take. Should there be any concerns, feel free to contact us. Your well-being and comfort during pregnancy are our top priorities.

11. Does insurance cover acupuncture or herbal medicine?

BC Medical Services Plan

The Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP) covers acupuncture treatment for individuals receiving premium assistance. However, herbal medicine is not covered under MSP. If you're unsure about your coverage, we can verify it for you and inform you about the number of treatments remaining for the year. Please bring your CareCard or Personal Health Number to your first appointment. A doctor's referral is not necessary.

MSP provides coverage for a combined annual limit of 10 visits for acupuncture, massage therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, naturopathy, and non-surgical podiatry. For premium assistance beneficiaries, MSP covers $23.00 per visit.

Extended Health Coverage

The extent of extended health coverage varies by plan, typically ranging from 70% to 100% of treatment fees. Some plans offer a fixed dollar amount per year rather than a percentage.

Please consult your benefits booklet or contact your insurance provider to understand the specifics of your coverage.

To obtain reimbursement from your extended health plan, submit your receipts directly to your provider. We recommend submitting receipts regularly to avoid missing submission deadlines.

12. What conditions can TCM treat?

It's wonderful to see how acupuncture is gaining recognition for its effectiveness in treating various conditions. The study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2003, titled "Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials," has indeed shed light on the therapeutic potential of acupuncture.

Here's the list of conditions compiled from that report:
